What Is the VKU Course?
The VKU (Verkehrskundeunterricht) is Switzerland's mandatory traffic-awareness course for new drivers. It takes eight hours in total — two sessions of four hours each — and ends with a certificate, not an exam. The certificate is recognised throughout Switzerland and Liechtenstein, so one course works no matter where you take your driving test.
You'll find it listed in your licence-journey paperwork asVerkehrskunde — the German name for the traffic-awareness course. Attending ours in English changes nothing about its official status. More answers in the FAQ below.
What to Expect from Your VKU Course in English
The course runs over two weekday evenings, four hours each, in a modern classroom near Zurich HB. Teaching follows the official ASTRA curriculum — five modules built around real traffic situations, with interactive videos and plenty of discussion. There is no final exam: attend both sessions and the certificate is yours.

From 2027: VKU Before the Theory Exam
Important – from 1 January 2027: the VKU must be completed before you can register for the theory exam, and the course content also covers modern driver-assistance systems (official ASTRA change). If you're starting your licence journey now, taking the course early costs nothing extra — the certificate never expires.

What is the VKU?
VKU stands for Verkehrskundeunterricht — Switzerland's mandatory traffic-awareness course for new drivers. It is an 8-hour course split into two 4-hour sessions that bridges the gap between the theory test and practical driving experience.
When should I take the VKU?
The ideal time is right after your theory test, so the training stays fresh for your practical lessons. You must complete the VKU course before registering for the practical driving exam — and from 2027 you'll need it even earlier, before the theory exam itself (see the callout above).
How long is the VKU certificate valid?
The VKU certificate no longer expires — since 1 January 2021 it stays valid for life. It is recognised by all cantonal road traffic offices in Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein.
What should I bring to the course?
A valid ID or passport, and your Swiss learner's permit if you already have one. Everything else — materials, handouts and study videos — is included.
How much English do I need?
The whole course runs in plain, clear English — slides, videos and discussion included. If you can hold a conversation, you'll follow the course; and you can ask questions at any time.
Do I need the VKU with a foreign license?

Is there an exam at the end?
No — the VKU has no final test. Attend both sessions and you'll receive your official certificate on the spot.
